a myth
tells a story in which human limits can be crossed
a hymn
addresses a power that might cross those limits for us
A group of finite people with infinite appetites gathers to search for a way beyond the limits of the human condition.
Across Adam Guettel’s score, myth and hymn become two different ways of confronting the unknowable.
The songs ask whether the distances between people, bodies, faith, work, death, and uncertainty can ever truly be overcome — and what it means to keep living when no answer arrives.
casting
Seeking six actor-singers for a small, ensemble-driven company, accompanied by a live chamber ensemble.
Each performer carries principal material while remaining part of the collective world of the piece throughout. The staging will be intentionally spare, with the score, bodies, light, and ensemble relationship doing most of the storytelling.
These tracks are a working casting structure, not six isolated “characters.” The production may continue to adjust assignments as the ensemble takes shape.
